How much could we save by switching to LED bulbs?
Among all the lighting fixtures we can buy, buying LED lights (including outdoor area lights, indoor LED lights, and solar-powered LED lights) is the best way up to now to reduce our energy bills. The other lighting options like halogen, incandescent, and CFL (compact fluorescent lamps) can not save as much energy and cost as LED bulbs do in the long run.
In fact, LED lighting products are now the most popular lighting used in homes and businesses. In 2019, Statista showed LED sources possess almost half of all lighting sources, and the number is expected to increase up to 87% by 2030.
So, what makes these bulbs so popular? First, these LEDs are very efficient. A 16.5-watt LED light bulb can be used to replace a 75-watt incandescent or a 22-watt CFL, according to nonprofit Green America, which also notes that LEDs have a very long lifespan. LED lights' life span is 24 times and 1-3 times longer than incandescent lamps and fluorescent lamps.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that lighting takes 15 percent of the average household's electricity bill. House owners can save a lot by switching to LED lights. Best of all, we get the same/higher level of lighting as a CFL or other bulb type, but with less cost and lower energy usage. As per the DOE, people can save $225 a year by replacing other lighting fixtures with LED fixtures. Especially obvious for those who change the incandescent lamps to LED lamps. CFA (Consumer Federation of America) made a survey that consumers could save about $1,000 over 10 years if they replaced 20 lights with LED lights.
In short term, the cost to replace all lamps with LED lights is higher, but in long term, we save a lot, since LED lights work longer like 50,000 hours or even more. And led lights have higher output lumens, which means you can use lower wattage than the traditional lights.
LED lighting lamps & fixtures will be the only option soon.
Soon, buying non-LED lighting products will no longer be an option. In 2022, the Biden administration's new energy regulations ban the manufacture and selling of non-LED lights 2023 and phasing out the use of non-LED lighting bulbs & fixtures. Officials expect the move will collectively save consumers $3 billion a year in utility bills and reduce global carbon emissions by 222 million metric tons a year, which is equivalent to the 28 million homes' annual emissions.
At the same time, people can still save on lighting bills by making sure that the wattage, color, and lumens of the LED bulbs they choose are suitable lights for their houses to save cost. We suggest turning off all lights when we are out to save energy and cost. We can also use smart LED lights which can help us cut more bills.
