Is there another magical effect for LED lights? May kill the coronavirus
Can LED lights kill the coronavirus?
[Article on the news website of the British "Medical Express" on December 15] Question: LED lamps can kill the coronavirus.
Researchers at Tel Aviv University (TAU) have discovered that the use of ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) can kill the coronavirus efficiently, quickly, and at low cost. They believe that this UV-LED technology will soon be used for personal and commercial use.
This is the first study on the disinfection efficiency of different wavelengths or frequencies of UV-LED irradiation on coronaviruses. It is led by Professor Hadas Mamane, the environmental engineering project leader of the TAU School of Mechanical Engineering and the Iby and Aladar Fleischman School of Engineering. The paper will be published in 2020. November issue of "Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B: Biology".
Professor Mamane said that the world is currently looking for effective ways to disinfect the coronavirus, but the problem is that the use of chemical sprays to disinfect buses, trains, stadiums or airplanes requires a lot of manpower, and in order to make the spray effective, The chemical spray needs to stay on the surface for a certain period of time to be effective. However, a disinfection system equipped with LED bulbs can be installed in ventilation systems and air conditioners to disinfect the inhaled air before discharging it indoors.
In the research, it is found that it is very simple to use LED lighting bulbs that radiate ultraviolet light to kill the coronavirus. This LED bulb is cheaper, easier to buy, and consumes less energy. It does not contain mercury like ordinary bulbs, and can safely and quickly Applied in all areas of our lives, it has more commercial and social significance.
Researchers tested the best wavelength for killing coronaviruses and found that a wavelength of 285 nanometers is almost as effective as a wavelength of 265 nanometers, and can destroy more than 99.9% of coronaviruses in less than half a minute. This result is critical, because compared to the cost of a 265-nanometer bulb, a 285-nanometer LED bulb is much lower in cost and easier to obtain.
Eventually, with the development of science, the factory will make necessary adjustments to install light bulbs in automation systems or air conditioning, vacuum and water supply systems, so that large surfaces and spaces can be effectively disinfected. Professor Mamane believes that the technology will be put into use in the near future.
It is worth noting that trying to use this method to disinfect indoor surfaces is very dangerous. To be fully effective, a system must be designed to avoid direct exposure of the human body to light.
In the future, the researchers will test the combination of their unique comprehensive destruction mechanisms, as well as their recent development of more ideas for joint efficient direct and indirect destruction of bacteria and viruses on different surfaces, air and water.
