The innovation of LED lighting illuminates the future.

There are many people who claim to be the inventors of the electric light, and many developments in the mid-19th century paved the way for the world to become a little brighter.

We may not be able to find a clear "discovery"! But what we know is that in 1879, Thomas Edison applied for the first commercially successful patent for an electric light bulb with carbonized bamboo filaments. Except for minor improvements in filament materials, including the transition from carbon to tungsten in the early 20th century, we have basically been using Edison’s ancient technology since then until recently.

Incandescent bulbs are rapidly spreading, providing low-cost and high-quality lighting. But in the past ten or twenty years, lighting technology has undergone fundamental changes. In most residential and commercial facilities, LED lamps have replaced traditional incandescent lamps.

LED lights have been around since the 1960s, but it was not until the invention of the blue LED in the 1990s that white LED bulbs were manufactured. Since then, it has become the dominant technology in many markets to compete with traditional light bulbs due to its steadily declining price.

In global residential sales, LED has also surpassed fluorescent lamps in 2018, reaching a market share of 40%. Today, an LED bulb may retail for US$2 to US$5 in many countries, and the price is even lower in some areas. For example, in India, the government successfully promoted the adoption of LED lighting by reducing taxes and duties on local LED lighting products manufacturers.

Compared with incandescent bulbs, LEDs have many advantages: they use much longer, generate less heat, consume less power, and thus reduce life-span costs, and their lower power consumption makes them more environmentally friendly. LEDs also use less power than most fluorescent lamps and have the advantage of reaching full brightness immediately when they are turned on.
