Why do not use street lamps for highway lighting?

Why don’t highways use street lights? Generally, highways are not equipped with street LED lights except for important bridge decks, tunnels, and upper and lower highway intersections. However, there are LED street & area lights on ordinary urban roads, but there are no street lamps on high-speed highways? This is because of the following two reasons:

1. The highway is long and the traffic flow is too random. The installation of LED road lighting products for the passage of a small number of vehicles will inevitably cause huge energy waste.

2. The illumination distance of LED road area Lights is limited. The general street lamp spacing of urban arterial roads is about 30-33 meters, the brightest point is under the light poles, and the center point between the two light poles is the darkest point. If the highway is set with street LED lamps according to the mode of urban arterial roads. Assuming that when driving at a speed of 120 kilometers per second, the distance traveled by the vehicle is 33.3 meters per second. It is easy to produce visual fatigue with light into the eyes.

Therefore, if energy-saving street lampss are installed on expressways, it is neither energy-saving nor scientific.

When a car is driving on a highway, the lighting mainly depends on the headlights of the vehicle itself, and the lighting of its own headlights is continuous. In addition, the highway has contour markings every 25 meters on both sides of the guardrail, and high reflectance on the road surface. Effect markings and reflective road studs, as long as the headlights are turned on at night, the highway reflective effect is very good. Lights on the road will affect the effect of high-reflective markings and reflective road studs.

Of course, some few expressways will install some high pole lights for auxiliary lighting on important bridge decks (cross-sea bridges), overpasses or ramps. At the same time, these road sections often drive at speed limits.
