A 120 years lighting-on bulb light has unveiled a big conspiracy in the lighting industry
In the old online world, there is such a niche website "centennialbulb" with an old design. All the content on the website is about a bulb light. This light lamp bulb has almost not been off lighting since it was started using in 1901. It is still working until now. 120 years (more than 989,000 hours) of useing time enables this bulb the longest-life bulb in the world, and has been recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records many times.
This bulb lamp was made by Shelby Electric Company around 1890. The craftsmanship is quite primitive. The filament is an ancient carbon filament and made by hand. Everyone might have heard the story of Edison inventing the lighting bulb: "Edison After experimenting with more than 1,600 materials and doing experiments for thousands of times, he finally found carbonized cotton filament is the best material for filament." This kind of carbon fiber is the filament for this bulb, and Edison only started commercial manufacturing lighting lamp bulb in 1878.
Nearly same as Edison’s bulb light, the old antique was donated to the Livermore-Pleason Fire Department in California, USA in 1901, and has been used until now. It was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest working life bulb light in 1970, 2007, 2012 and 2014. It's just that because of the long working life, The power has lowered to 4 watts from initial 30W or 60W after long time using.
For sure, this bulb light fixture is not alone, and there are also many other bulb lights of the same era that can continue to light up. For example, the second-life bulb lighting has been working for 112 years, and also its brightness is also very low. People set up an account on Facebook for it and update its work status regularly. The working hours of the third and fourth bulbs were respectively 91 years and 93 years , and they were all failed after 2000.
Each second these ultra-long standby light bulb lamps are on, they silently reveal a big conspiracy to us in the industry. They have adopted a "planned obsolescence" strategy for their products to make these products bad quality so that buyers purchase more often, sellers can make more money.
The lighting products manufacturer firstly propose "planned scrap". Around 1920, light bulbs easily reached life-time more than 2500 hours. Some of them worked longer time. Small manufacturers lowered their prices during the increasing fierce competition.
The result is that the sales of large lighting fixtures manufacturers have been declining each year. They gathered in Geneva on December 23, 1924 and held an international light bulb conference. They agreed to establish an organization called the Helios Monopoly Alliance in which they aim to increase the relationship between demand and supply by controlling the bulb lights' lifespan so that consumers can replace the bulbs with a regular plan.
The alliance requests that all bulbs must have a life time about 1,000 hours, and any bulb with too high or too low lifespan must be fined. Meanwhile, it was easily to increase the life, but it was difficult to control the bulb lifespan accurately. To reduce the life of the bulb, all alliance manufacturers have created a liaison organization to share technologies each other to reduce bulb lifespan. This policy is working. The average life of the bulb dropped by one-third between 1926 and 1934, life span drops from 1,800 hours to only 1,205 hours.
To enable the public accept the decline in light bulbs's lifespan, the alliance started to advertise and promote. They claimed that the longer the life of the light bulb, the lower the working efficiency. And it will produce more heat and electricity waste while the bulb light fixtures get old. General Electric even made a short film directly showing that 1000 hours is the best life for a light bulb. Although this alliance has died out when the World War II started, and the lifespan of modern energy-saving bulbs and LED bulbs has far exceeded 1,000 hours, reaching 10,000 hours and 15,000 hours respectively. is there any man-made control of the bulb life in modern light bulbs? What about the factors?
