Display and interpretation of the world's top ten innovative LED light source devices in 2020 (3/6)
4. Far red/near infrared light OLED
In July, scientists from Newcastle University, University College London, London Nanotechnology Centre, the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Warsaw, Poland) and the National Research Council Institute of Nanostructured Materials (CNR-ISMN, Bologna, Italy) A new type of OLED processed by red/near infrared solution.

By integrating the device into a real-time VLC device, the OLED device achieved an error-free transmission speed of more than 1 Mb/s, successfully expanded the bandwidth, and achieved the fastest data speed ever for organic light-emitting diodes.
From the perspective of IoT applications, the data rate achieved by this OLED device is sufficient to support indoor point-to-point links, creating opportunities for new Internet of Things (IoT) connections and wearable and implantable biosensor technologies. In addition, because there are no toxic heavy metals in the active layer of organic light-emitting diodes, new VLC devices with this OLED device are expected to integrate portable, wearable or implantable organic biosensors.
5. High-efficiency nano-level LED
In August, efficient researchers such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the University of Maryland and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute developed a new type of nano-level light-emitting diode (LED) with the ability to generate laser light. The highlight of the LED device is its brightness, which is 100 to 1000 times that of a traditional sub-micron LED.
High-efficiency nano-level LED that can be used as a micro laser
In the production process of the LED device, although the materials used are similar to those of the traditional LED device, the researchers improved its internal structure and introduced zinc oxide fins. The slender shape and wider sides of the fin may be used. It can receive more current, so that the modified LED device can emit bright light ranging from violet light to ultraviolet light, generating up to 20 microwatts of power, which is hundreds or thousands of times that of ordinary small LEDs, and it has become a veritable micro laser.
With its high luminous efficiency, the LED device has important application value in chemical sensing, portable communication products, high-definition displays and chip-level equipment.
